REINTERPRETATION OF THE ALLGAEU HOUSE

For the house, the sloping hillside location to the east required a design that would incorporate the western sun, and open up the panoramic view that would be blocked by the adjacent houses below.

To preserve the view of the distinctive pyramid-shaped Säuling, the Ammergau Alps and Zugspitze, the house was pushed to the front edge of the lot and “tilts” down with the extremely sloping terrain. The uses normally found on the second floor were moved up the slope, so that the living and terrace areas moved upward.

The heights and surrounding spatial references, as well as the topographical conditions, are incorporated into the design, so that the residential floor level is exactly above the ridges of the adjacent houses below, and thus flows into the slope.

The façade is raised, joins the gable and finally slopes downwards. This creates an extraordinary window in the living area with a wonderful view of the mountains. The façade design plays with the principle of shuttering: it exposes the entrance, opens laterally and forms a free pulpit.
